Debate formats

A selection of debate formats. This is not an exhausting list. If you are looking to participate in a debate and have your own ideas, feel free to write out the format with the debate proposal.

4 Topic Format with open discussion

1v1 format where each participant presents 2 topics. Each topic gets a thorough discussion. Works best if both participants are able to have an open discussion without interruptions.

8-10 Topic format with moderated cross examination

1v1 format where each participant presents multiple topics. Topics have a limited time so many topics can be covered. A quick cross-examination for each topic is managed by the moderator. A good option if there is a concern for overtalking.

Debate format 2 presentations with discussion

1v1 format where each side starts with a presentation of evidence followed by a large time of open discussion. This only works if both interlocutors are unlikely to overtalk.

Modified Mace Format

2v2 format based on the academic Mace format with some elements from Oxford debates. Customized to work in a video format.
